2007-08 Clippers

The Clippers have one of the most consistent and talented forwards in the league, and Elton Brand comes back next season. They also have Corey Maggette, whose numbers will continue to rise into ’07-08.  On the downside, the Clippers will have to deal with Livingston’s injury into the next season – and Sam Casell, although a brilliant point guard, is 37 years old.  Livingston’s prescience on the court will be hard to replace.  In order to regain the success they had in ’05, the Clippers need a strong point guard and big shots from the backcourt.

Previous Seasons

These aren’t your dad’s Clippers. This group of Los Angeles ballers is taking the Western Conference by surprise. Veterans Elton Brand, Cuttino Mobley and Sam Cassell have brought playoff experience to the Clippers, who also feature a solid group of youngsters like Corey Maggette and Shaun Livingston. Will it be enough to cash the Clippers’ ticket to the NBA Playoffs? The answers come with Los Angeles Clippers tickets.

It would be hard to say the Los Angeles Clippers were anything but bad for their first few years in LA. After stints as the Buffalo Braves (1970-78), and the San Diego Clippers (1978-1984) the Clippers arrived in Los Angels and promptly stumbled to a 31-51 record while changing coaches to no avail. Things got a little better for the 1985-86 season as the Clippers won 32 games but the franchise hit rock bottom the next year by posting an unbelievably bad 12-70 record to finish as the undisputed worst tea in the NBA. Hiring a new coach in Gene Shue for the 1987-88 season didn’t help much. The Clippers won only 17 games under Shue. The high point for fans with Clippers tickets was watching Michael Cage win the rebounding title. The Clippers promptly traded Cage to Seattle, selected Danny Manning in the 1998 NBA Draft, and won a meager 21 games in 1988-89. Trying desperately to improve, Los Angeles selected Danny Ferry of Duke in the first round of the 1989 NBA Draft. Ferry however had other plans, and sailed off to Italy. GM Elgin Baylor swapped draft picks for players and obtained Ron Harper which would pay off down the line.

The 1991-92 season marked a turnaround in the Clippers’ fortunes. After head coach Mike Schuler was replaced by Larry Brown, the Clippers broke a long streak of losing seasons by posting a 45-37 record and hit the playoff jackpot for the first time in 16 years. Although they lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Utah Jazz, fans breathed a sigh of relief just getting to the postseason. Brown led the Clippers back to the playoffs in 1993 behind Danny Manning’s All-Star season. Finishing at 41-41 the Clippers again lost in the first round of the playoffs, losing to the Houston Rockets in five games. After the season, the Clippers incredibly allowed Larry Brown to go to the Indiana Pacers, thus losing the first winning coach in Los Angeles Clippers history.

In 1993-94, new head coach Bob Weiss fearlessly led the Clippers to last place in the Pacific Division. By trading Danny Manning to the Atlanta Hawks for Dominique Wilkins, then losing Wilkins and Ron Harper to free agency, the Clippers found their way to a 17 win season in 1994-95. In 1997, the solid play of Loy Vaught gave the Clippers a post-season berth with a sub .500 record of 34-48, but the Clippers once again were ousted in the first round, this time by the Utah Jazz in three games.
